Preparing for New Wood Floors – Demo Day
Finally – the floors are getting replaced. Woo hoo! We picked out a lovely birch espresso wood to replace the vinyl and carpet that runs the back of our house. All the major walkways of our house will be wood, and thirty years worth of dirt will be gone from the house. There are other spots in the house where we’ve ripped out carpet, and the thick layer of junk under those sections was gross. I’m a little bit scared to see how much craziness is under this carpet, because we walk on these sections every day – but I’m pumped to see it leave! Hooray for demo day!
Yesterday was the beginning of our demo. During the day I started yanking out the vinyl and linoleum in the kitchen. We knew there were multiple layers down there. Once I removed the vinyl, Grace thought the old linoleum was our new floor. “I love it! It’s my favorite!” she happily cheered. She was sad when I started ripping up the linoleum too. I was sad at the funky, old smell that now fills out house from the linoleum. (The blurry picture in the middle was taken by one of the kids.)
Can you see the particle board down there? That third layer was installed above the subfloor for some reason. We’re guessing that made the linoleum on the same level as the carpet? Unfortunately it was tightly screwed down, and we’ve been removing those screws one by one since we uncovered it. After watching Johnny, I went to Home Depot and bought myself a second hammer and nail puller. We removed one while section last night, but there is LOTS more to do.
The couple that demos together, stays together!
Lots of hammering and pulling. . . luckily the girls let me keep working today, probably because they gt to color and watch endless cartoons while I worked. They also thought it was super cool to watch me pull nails during lunchtime, and I had to keep shooing them away from the mess. After this afternoon, I’m happy to announce I have 95% of the nails out, which is awesome because my hand is getting bruised from all the brute force. Whew! Hubby can do the rest when he gets home from work.
This is what nail pulling looks like:
